The “Glow” Factor:
What sets the ‘Copper King’ apart is the gradient of its spines—ranging from a creamy tan at the base to a rich, burnished orange at the tips. This creates a hazy, luminous effect that mimics the “golden hour,” making it a perfect centerpiece for sunny windowsills or outdoor rock gardens.
Growth & Care:
- Growth Habit: A prolific clumper that grows up to 6–8 inches tall. It will readily produce “pups” or offsets around the central stem, eventually forming a dense, rounded mat of copper fingers.
- Bloom Season: In late winter and early spring, look for a “crown” of delicate, bell-shaped flowers in shades of pale yellow or cream.
- Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight (6+ hours). The more light it receives, the more vibrant and “copper” the spines will become.
- Watering: Extremely drought-tolerant. Use the “soak and dry” method—water deeply only when the soil is 100% dry. During winter dormancy, reduce watering to once a month.
- Hardiness: Best in temperatures between 60°F–80°F. Hardy in USDA zones 9–11; if you live in a colder climate, simply bring it indoors for the winter.
Shipping & Sizing Note:
- Sizing: Sizing is based on the nursery pot diameter (2″, 4″, etc.). Plants are unique living things and may vary slightly in height or cluster density from the photos.
- Dormancy: In the fall and winter months, we ship these cacti as dry as possible to protect them from root rot and freezing. Don’t worry if they look a little “thirstier” upon arrival—they will plump back up shortly after their first spring watering!
- Safety: This species is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though the spines can still be a physical irritant, so keep it out of reach of curious paws.
